Merit School of Music seeks highly qualified candidates for the position of Band Instructor to start teaching this fall in our Merit Music in Communities Program. Successful candidates will be offered between 6-16 hours of weekly band rehearsals depending on availability. Merit’s band programs take place at Chicago Public schools, community sites and neighboring school districts.

Organization Overview

Since its founding in 1979, Merit School of Music has successfully motivated and inspired over 50,000 young people with high-quality music instruction. The School’s broad-ranging comprehensive curriculum, extensive level of financial aid, sense of community and the standard of excellence set forth by the faculty and students are major components of its success.

Merit offers a multi-leveled, structured curriculum in a college preparatory environment. Programs take place at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop and at nearly 30 locations in neighborhoods across the City. Instruction is offered to approximately 5,000 students of all ages, from infants to adults, and from beginners to the Juilliard-bound by over 150 accomplished faculty members.

Merit has an annual operating budget of approximately $6 million, of which more than half is supported by contributed revenue, with a third coming from earned revenue, including rental income.

Reporting Relationship

The Band Teacher reports to the Band Program Director

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Band Teacher include, but are not limited to:
Teaching weekly band rehearsals to students in 4th – 8th grade
Prepare students for performances two to three times per year
Follow Merit’s benchmarks for large ensemble instruction
Support students’ growth through Merit’s continuum of programming
Track student attendance and provide student recommendations for on-site programs
Assist Program Manager with instrument disbursement and collection
Attend Merit faculty meetings and departmental meetings
Other projects as assigned

Personal Skills/Attributes/Qualifications

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:
Demonstrated success teaching beginning band to a similar age group (4th – 8th grade)
Demonstrated success teaching in a mixed instrument setting (woodwind, brass, percussion)
Strong classroom management skills
Ability to communicate effectively and work well with Merit staff and partnering leadership
Punctual, professional and collegial
The ability to travel via car or public transportation

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Music or equivalent experience

Schedule

Classes may meet before school (7:00am – 8:00am), during the school day (9:00 – 3:00pm), and after school (3pm – 5pm).

Compensation
$50.00 per hour
