Part-Time Educator | Jane Addams Hull-House Museum

Serving as primary liaisons between the museum and the public, Educators provide quality visitor and educational experiences through practicing and maintaining high professional standards for museum tours and related education programs. Annually, Educators can expect to engage 12,000 walk-in visitors and facilitated tour participants including: UIC and other college students, faculty, K-12 students, as well as professionals, seniors, and community members/organizations. Part-Time Educators report directly to the Senior Education Manager to develop and facilitate museum tours, support in-school and other classroom-based programs and newer education programs as needed. We are seeking candidates who are enthusiastic about education and visitor engagement. This position requires some weekend and evening availability.



  • Greet and engage all museum visitors in the museum and gift shop with respect, courtesy, commitment to learning and radical hospitality, in line with Museum Protocol. 

  • Answer phones and respond to visitor emails with professionalism, clarity, and curiosity. 

  • Assist in operating the museum and gift shop, including opening, closing, and facilitating customer purchases in accordance with the Gift Shop Operations Manual. 

  • Open and close the museum and Resident’s Dining Hall in line with Museum Facilities and Operation Protocol to ensure the safety and care of the facility, collections, staff, and visitors. 

  • Master museum tour content and facilitate tours focusing on critical thinking, engaging and connecting historical content to the present, and building on the natural curiosity of visitors. 

  • Support the development and facilitation of in-school and other off-site education programs, as needed. 

  • Support outreach and community engagement by promoting education programs. 

  • Assist in the development of individually driven educational projects and programs, such as specialty tours and hands-on workshops created in partnership with community groups and cultural partners. 

  • Participate in bi-weekly Education Team Meetings by contributing agenda items, sharing project updates, asking questions, and sharing ideas about education programs. 

Skills & Qualifications: 


Bachelor’s degree in arts education, history, museum studies, humanities or related studies preferred.


Background in history, art, social justice, gender and women’s studies, race and ethnic studies, labor, immigration, sociology, social work, public health, peace and conflict studies or related discipline preferred.


Ability to work cooperatively and independently required. 


Experience with or interest in youth / community engagement required. 


Experience in public engagement or visitor services preferred. 


Experience in classroom or outside of classroom teaching and/or educational programming and training preferred. 


Cultural competence, experience in collaborating with diverse communities or other related areas of experience required.


Strong organizational and interpersonal skills required.


Ability to work weekends and attend staff trainings and meetings required. 


Multilingual speaker preferred.
