Stitcher Overhire



Compass Creative Dramatics is a traveling children’s theatre based in Chicago. Each week, a team of two teaching artists travels to a new community across the US and teaches up to 75 student actors a musical in just 5 days. On Friday of each week, the student actors receive their costumes for dress rehearsal and continue to wear their costumes through two performances before turning them in to be laundered and sent to the next community! Compass costumes are built for the long-haul; each show’s costumes travel for many years and are worn hundreds of times! The Compass Creative Dramatics Costume Department is currently seeking a stitcher for its upcoming production process of Cinderella (Saves The Day!)  and The Jungle Book in January and February of 2019.


Duties and Responsibilities may include:


  • Some fabric cutting

  • Prepping and pressing fabric

  • Stitching assignments requiring machine stitching and hand stitching

  • Stitching assignments ranging from beginner level to intermediate level costume construction builds

  • Stitching assignments extending to various costume alterations

  • Demonstrating procedures and offering assistance for Compass costume interns if needed

  • Working on partial projects offsite with intermediate deadlines for costumes to be returned onsite


Time commitment:

  • January 7th 2019-March 1st 2019


Availability expectations:

  • On-site work days are not required, but overhire is welcomed to join the Compass costume team during work days in the costume workspace, if necessary. On-site work days for the Compass costume team will be scheduled weekly, but will generally fall on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and some Sundays



Contracts are drawn on a project basis and range from 10 - 40 hours of expected stitching. Compensation is based per project and range $75 - $450.

  • Potential extension may be available; availability will be determined by costume manager

Skills & Qualifications: 


  • 2-3 years of professional stitching experience

  • Background in costume design and/or fashion design is preferred

  • A range between studio-trained stitching and self-taught stitching is preferred

  • Graduating seniors in B.A., B.F.A., and M.F.A. programs encouraged to apply


Potential Extension:

Short contract extension may be possible; availability of such an extension will be determined by the costume manager and will require no more than 15 additional stitching hours.
