A staple on Chicago's Northside since 1875, Merz Apothecary is a family owned and run pharmacy that offers health and personal care items from across the world. The business has expanded in recent years to include the adjoining Q Brothers store and a Chicago loop location. Merz also has a thriving e-commerce website, Smallflower.com, and actively sells on Amazon.com. To keep it running smoothly, this multi-channel business maintains departments for sales, customer service, buying, amazon fulfillment, shipping & receiving, marketing, and accounting.

 

Web Designer/Administrator

The Web Designer/Administrator will contribute to Merz’s expanding suite of public-facing digital properties including web, mobile, and e-commerce. This requires strong expertise in both design and front-end technology.  This role will help support the growth and stability of Merz’s digital presence.

Responsibilities

Content Maintenance (50%)

  • Day-to-Day website content updates

  • Manage email segmentation, automation and A/B testing

  • Design new templates/pages/modules that fit within the established style guide and brand system

  • Work to identify appropriate photography needed for new content, and prep images for the web

  • HTML/CSS coding within existing CMS systems as necessary

Print & Web Design (25%)

  • Work closely with team to design visual elements for web and email content, digital advertising and social media (cross-promotional graphics)

  • Effectively communicate conceptual ideas and design rationale

  • Manage and design email graphics and layout

  • Postcard design and layout, interior graphics and covers for catalogs

  • Develop rapid revisions/iterations of concepts as necessary

  • Create in-store signage and various marketing materials as needed

  • Design and layout for print & digital ads

Social Media Work (15%)

  • Manage the content of on-site digital media boards

  • Visual Management for Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube

  • Creating posts, cover images and event graphics for all sites

  • Design graphics for Product Review Videos

  • Work to expand audience, increase engagement, and drive click throughs and comments

Other Duties (10%)

  • Maintain digital asset archives by sorting through current archives to identify, digitize, tag and organize Merz vast photo library

  • Stay up-to-date on emerging design trends and best practices

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements
Skills & Qualifications: 

Qualifications

 

Education and Experience

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a design-related field

  • 1-3 years working in digital design; e-commerce experience is a plus

  • Experience with assessing, color-correcting, retouching digital photography  

  • Experience with web-based content management systems

  • Advanced experience with Adobe Creative Suite and desire to stay current on industry software and design tools

 

Skills and Attributes

 

  • Fluent in HTML and CSS and Javascript

  • Excellent visual design skills (typography and layout), including a natural understanding of brand aesthetic and ability to execute throughout different projects

  • Knowledge of mobile/responsive design methods

  • Good digital file organizational skills

  • Close attention to visual and written details

  • Ability to work efficiently under deadlines

  • Excellent communication skills, open to accepting and providing feedback

  • Photography and videography skills a plus
